Keeping an animal as a pet means adopting it as part —practically a member, if not really a member— of the family. Financially capped cover

E.g :If your pet developed diabetes and you had a policy that was financially capped at £3,000, you may need to claim £2,000 in the first year. By year two, the amount you can claim for treatment of the diabetes is now just £1,000. After this, you would have to pay for the treatment for the rest of your pet’s life.

Lifelong cover
The best pet insurance is cover that pays for treatment up to a certain amount, every year, for as long as your pet needs treatment.
E.g :If your pet were to develop epilepsy and your policy covers up to £3,000 every year, you could claim for treatment up to this limit each year for the rest of your pet’s life.

The Border Collie is a sheep-herding dog of exceptional qualities. For many years the Border Collie has excelled at sheepdog trials as a dog with uncanny instinctive abilities to herd sheep. The dog performs this function often without any direction from the herder. When direction is given it is through low whistles or hand signals on the part of the human Master.

The Border Collie will lie down with uncanny timing and precision, will dart in or out at just the right moment to guide the sheep, all the while maintaining an intense eye contact or “staring” at the sheep; this eye contact is a well known characteristic of the breed. Anyone who has seen this dog perform at herding trials cannot help but be fascinated by the outstanding talents of the breed.

The Border Collie originated as the name implies, from the border territories of England and Scotland. The first Sheepdog Trials were held in North Wales in 1873, where a dog named “Tweed” won the trial and also a prize for being “the most handsome dog”. It is said that this dog became the foundation of the Border Collie breed.

The Border Collie was imported into Australia as a working sheepdog. The breed developed in that country as a versatile herding dog. It was used very successfully on both sheep and cattle and in the vast ranchlands of Australia became well known as the herding dog of choice. When it later began to be imported into the United States, it also joined the ranks of the dogs who are shown in dog shows and is popular as an Agility dog and Obedience dog.

The dog is extremely agile, able to crouch, spring and corner skilfully for the purpose of driving the recalcitrant sheep or cattle into line. The Border’s coat should not be overly abundant yet should be double and thick enough to be weather resistant. In appearance it is most like the collie but with shorter length of feathers. There is a “smooth coat” variety of this breed, however this variety appears mostly in Great Britain and the most popular type of coat is the “rough coat”. The dog is of medium height and build and comes in many colors, but white should never be predominant.

This breed is highly instinctive. Coincidentally, both The Border collie and the Newfoundland have been used in the genetic studies of the Human Genome Research Project as the DNA markers for comparison of strong inherited behavioral tendencies. The Border Collie is noted as one of the most intelligent of breeds and is not happy without a job to do. It learns quickly and enjoys the challenge of learning. This is not a dog who will be happy left alone for hours in a house and also should not be left unsupervised in an unfenced area. This dog needs mental and physical stimulation to be happy and healthy.

The dog does well in Obedience, Rally Obedience, Agility, Flyball, Sheep Herding Trials and is a popular Conformation breed. Furthermore their medium size and high intelligence have made them quite useful as Search and Rescue dogs. These dogs should always exhibit stable temperament and be absolutely without shyness. People who have this dog as a pet or as a utility dog will have a loyal and faithful friend, one who will respond eagerly and willingly to any request and is happiest when asked to perform a job.

Overview

The Border Collie is originally from Northumberland where they have first been bred during the 19th century. They may however be aggressive toward other dogs of the same sex, and should also not be left alone with non-canine animals. It is important to socialise the Border Collie enough when young so that they are not shy when older. These dogs require lots of attention, stimulation and exercise to be happy. The Border Collie lives for serving their owners’ day in and day out, but will not be ideal for those with not enough time to spend with their animals. These dogs are too bright to sit around the house with no job.

Care

Border Collie will need to be combed and brushed regularly to make sure their coats are in a good condition. However, during shedding seasons extra care is required. They should only be bathed or dry shampooed when it is deemed necessary. It is also advised that their ears and coats are checked for ticks on a regular basis. The Border Collie is an average shedding breed.

Training

Early socialisation and obedience training is strongly recommended for this breed. The Border Collie is very trainable, and will do best in a training environment with enough praise, consistency, fairness and respect. Seeing that this is a very sensitive dog, they should never be treated in a cruel or unkind manner. These dogs are exceptionally talented in herding, police work, competitive obedience, search and rescue, Frisbee trials, and fly ball. Border Collies are also used effectively as rehabilitation dogs and guide dogs for people that are blind.

Health problems

In generally the Border Collie is a very tough breed, but they do have some medical conditions potential owners should be aware of such as hip dysplasia that can cause mild to severe lameness, osteochondritis dissecans which is a degenerative disease of the joints, progressive retinal, epilepsy and deafness.

In many cases, pets are valued as family members as much, if not more, than our traditional two legged members. As a result, their comfort and safety when traveling are as big a concern as ours.

The following provides information that can help you make the best decisions for your pets travel needs.

Your dog or cat must have papers proving that a rabies vaccine was administered at least thirty days, but not more than 180 days prior to entry into Panama.

You must take your pet to the vet for a complete health check as well as to get a certificate for international travel. This health certificate for international travel must be completed within 10 days of the date you plan to travel to Panama.

You must then have your pet’s certificate of international travel stamped by the nearest Panamanian Embassy or Consulate. –These stamps cost approximately $30.00.

Some things to consider when choosing an airline for your pets are:

1. Some airlines have embargos on pet transport during extreme summer or winter months.

2. Most airlines will allow you to take your pet in the cabin with you as long as your pet meets certain weight and size restrictions.

3. There is usually an extra fee associated with bringing pets. Some airlines charge according to the weight of the animal others charge a flat rate.

4. If at all possible, try to arrange for your pet’s flights to be as direct as possible. The less time your pet has to spend traveling, the less stress he will experience.

Once you arrive in Panama with your pet, you must then pay a fee of $130 USD. You must also take an oath agreeing to home quarantine your pet for 40 days.

If any of the above steps are neglected it is possible that the authorities will take your pet upon arrival to Panama to be quarantined for 40 days at the airport vet facilities at a cost of 12 USD per day. In most cases these facilities are not as plush as what your pet may be accustomed to.

The airport vet is the only person who can approve your animals papers and release your pet. The normal hours of the airport vet are between 9AM to 12PM Monday through Friday. And 1PM to 4PM Monday through Thursday. With this in mind, try to arrange the arrival or your pet’s flight according to the airport vets work schedule.

Bred for their intelligence and herding instincts, Border Collies are descended from British herding dogs. A medium sized dog, Border Collies will grow to about 19 to 22 inches and 30 to 45 pounds. They will live about 12 to 15 years. Border Collies have medium to longer hair that comes in a variety of colors and are prone to shedding. Border Collies need to be brushed regularly to keep the coat healthy and dirt free. Border Collies are also known for their stare. Though their eyes can be brown, amber or blue, it is the Border Collie stare that people remember. This is part of the herding instinct, and a Border Collie will attempt to herd almost anything, including cars and children.

Great care must be taken with a Border Collie to ensure it does not hurt itself or others. A fenced in yard and plenty of leash training is a must with this breed. Border Collies are easy to train due to their intelligence, but, because of their desire to work, Border Collies must have work to do. If they are not given tasks to perform and room to roam, they will become bored and destructive.

They must have a lot of stimulation and activity to stay happy. Though good with children, Border Collies may attempt to herd them and, to keep the ‘herd’ in line, Border Collies have been known to nip. Border Collies usually do not do well with other animals, due to their herding instinct, and can become aggressive with other dogs of the same gender. Border Collies can be excellent household pets, but must be cared for by a family willing to give them the training, attention, care and activities they need. Border Collies are not recommended for people who live in apartments or those who do not plan on spending a lot of time with their pet.

Border Collies do have some breed specific issues. Some are prone to hip dysplasia, PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and Collie Eye Anomaly. Many Border Collies are allergic to fleas and some are prone to epilepsy and deafness. Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) is a shoulder lameness that can develop between the ages of 4 to 12 months. Border Collies have also been known to work themselves to exhaustion and suffer from heat stroke in the hot weather.

Because Border Collies are very physically active, they are prone to athletic injuries, such as pulled muscles, cruciate ligament ruptures, cuts and punctures, ripped toenails and footpads.

One of the unique aspects of having a bird for a pet is that this is one of the few pets that may actually be trained to talk. Many people feel that they’ll be able to communicate and have conversations with their pet birds but this may not be true in all cases. Even if a bird can talk fluently you must remember that even the smartest birds only have the intelligence of a toddler and therefore may not be able to tell you how they are feeling.

Whether your bird can talk or not, understanding what your pet is feeling is important to both you and your bird. One way to be able to do this is to be able to interpret his body language as this is a sure giveaway to his state of mind.

One good reason for understanding the body language of birds is that you can often avoid being bitten whether by your own pet or another exotic bird if you know when he is scared and when you should back off. If a bird is very scared, he will often try to make himself as thin as possible you will notice him standing very tall and looking very thin. His eyes may be dilated but they are not moving back and forth at all. In a way the bird is trying to make himself invisible – he thinks that if he makes himself as thin as possible and doesn’t move that the creature that is scaring him will overlook him.

If you try to reach into the cage to do pet or pick up a bird that is acting like this he may lash out with you in terror and you may get a nasty peck. The best thing to do is to squat down so that the bird is higher than you and look right at them with your eyes closed. Speak to him in a soft soothing tone and slowly open your eyes. This should help to relax the bird as they feel most comfortable when they higher than anyone else. The closing of your eyes is important because they consider blinking a sign of trust. Once you’ve got your pet bird into this state it doesn’t mean that he’s a can automatically let you reach in and pick them up you still want to use caution until you have him fully tamed.

If you bird is angry you will notice that his head is weaving back and forth and his eyes are dilated. He may be squawking loudly and leaning slightly forward for easy attack. His feathers will be puffed up. you might want to try distracting him with a millet sprayers favorite treat but you probably will want to get too close or you may experience a painful bite. When your bird is angry like this it’s best to let him come down before you try to approach him. Perhaps you might want to find out what made him angry so you can avoid this next time.

An excited bird might look similar to an angry bird with dilated pupils and he’ll be bobbing (not weaving) his head and have ruffled feathers. Depending on how excited he has his whole body to be moving around. He might be squawking and screeching sometimes loudly. An excited bird, even though he is happy, may also bite you because he’s too excited. It’s best to let him come down a little bit before handling.

A calm content bird will be sitting on his perch with one leg tucked up under him. He’ll be easy recognize due to his relaxed posture and he might groom oneself stretch out and even go to sleep. If you don’t make any sudden moves that startled her you can probably get them pop up when you finger and let you pet him easily when he is in a state of mind.

Knowing how your bird feels is important for training and ongoing companionship. Once your bird is very tame you probably won’t have to worry too much as he’ll welcome your attention, but in the beginning knowing whether he is frightened, angry or excited can help you gain his trust for easier training.

By knowing exactly what species of snake you want, you can save yourself a lot of trouble. Different species of similar snakes, such as boas or pythons, have different temperaments and grow to different sizes. Just knowing it is a boa or a python is not specific enough to know for sure what you are getting.

Finally, there are some people who just should not own pet snakes. These include homes with children under five and anyone with a compromised immune system, because there is a small possibility of a snake carrying salmonella.
