A hamster breeder would be a good idea. They should know alot about a hamster and how to take care of it. you can find a hamster breeder in the paper. If that is not a choice a magazine or a book would be my second choice. Today I went to my local library and checked out 3 books on Hamsters. If the library or magazines dont help( they should) I would then go on the net to google or ask.com and type in hamster or hamster care or how to care for a hamster. That will help you. Theres not much more you can do but this. But maybe you find another solution like a friend who has a hamster or someone you know that knows lots about them. I find all of my info in books @ the library and on the net. If you can offer lots of time with your pet and give it time to sleep in a dim and quiet area(hamster are nocturnal- they sleep in the day) in the day time a hamster is the right pet for you. Im gonna get one soon= my parents give in. but they will make me buy my own. You must think about how much a hamster will cost. You need a large cage, feed, treats every week r ok, a running wheel, a running ball, bedding, a house to sleep in , and bedding. Taking a hamster to the vet may become costly too.Think about it before buy one.

this book should be in Canada its called my hamster and me by petter hollmann

if you cant find the book you can go to these website
www.hamstercare.co.uk

www.hamsterific.com/hamstercare.cfm

but hears what i know
1. its cage should be at least 24 inches long 12 inches wide and 16 inches high : their is different types of cages wire cages and glass cages (a glass cage is just a fish tank) my hamsters seem to prefer the wire type
2. Water bottle and food dish (sometimes included in cage)
3. Bedding (pay attention to the brand you get some are not good for hamster's)
4. Biting toy so its teeth will not overgrow but you can also give it a dog biscuit (but only 2-3 times a week)
5. A block of salt (buy one at the pet store)
6. Provide a sleeping box
7. A run about ball so it can play safely out side its cage. Also provide other toys besides the wheel so your hamster won’t get bored (for example a toilet paper roll)
Cleaning
Once a week wash the cage and all the equipment with hot water and replace the shavings. Scrub the water bottle to remove algae. Every three days, clean the corners where your hamster urinates. Simply scoop out wet or soiled shavings and add new shavings.
Feeding
In addition to grain mixture your hamster needs fresh fruit or vegetables every day as well as small amounts of cottage cheese or yogurt. Fresh water must be available at all times. Never ever feed your hamster chocolate if you’re ever unsure about something doesn’t give it to your hamster.
Additional info
Keep your hamster in quiet room above the ground on a table away from any drafts that could make your hamster ill.
