Do you think getting an older golden retriever is a good idea?
I am going to adopt a golden retriever from a rescue, but I want to get an older one because I am 15 and I don’t want my parents to be stuck with a puppy when I go away to college. There is one that looks adorable on the rescue website that is 16 years old. I have never heard of a golden living that long. Do you think getting an older one is a good idea? How much longer do you think it would live?

I think it is wonderful that you are wanting to rescue a Golden Retriever. My only concern in you adopting a Golden of 16 years old is that although he may be quite a healthy dog for his age he may not live much longer and it would be very hard for you to lose him once you had become attached to him. Goldens do not usually live longer than 17 years so he is doing very well to have lived so long.
If you feel you could cope with this then by all means go ahead with it and give him lots of love and care within your family. I am sure he would appreciate it. No dog of this age should be in Rescue. He needs plenty of warmth and comfort and, above all, companionship in his old age and I am sure he will reward you with his loyalty and gratitude for giving him a good home.
People like you who can adopt an older dog are very special.
I wish you all the luck in the world and hope it all works out well for you.
