Iguanas, snakes, turtles, birds, etc. probably would not be good choices for you. Like you have already discovered, iguanas and other lizards are difficult to provide properly for. Snakes are not good choices since most owners do not realize how dangerous some of them are or how big they can become. Most turtles require lots of care and also get sick a lot--hard to keep healthy. Birds are social creatures and need lots of attention. They can also become aggressive when they mature. The best suggestion I can make is a tarantula--it's unusual, not expensive, and not hard to keep if you do a little homework.
