well, you may not consider it as too exotic, but if it is your first pet that is not a dog or a cat, then i would suggest a box turtle. They require minimal care and can live for a very long time. my sister got one that was about two years old & she has had it for about 6 years.
The best pet would be a ball python. They are docile, calm, and beautiful. They stay clean ad are easy to keep. Ball pythons are themselves odorless and enjoying being handled quite often. they are curious snakes but mean no harm at all. If I stayed locked up most of my life I would probably be curious too. Feeding is a breeze. They feed on baby mice as a baby. Typically they love the live feeder ice or the some prefer the frozen “pinky” mice that need to be thawed. Ball pythons eat only need to eat once a week when small, and once every two weeks when adults. They are good pets for those who are away from home a bit. I hope this helps. Keep us informed!
Try a Degu.
Those are uncommon.
They are easy to maintain.
They are about as big as a fist.
You can hold them and they are fun to watch.
Look them up in you-tube and yahoo images.
To start up with they are not very expensive to have.
You can probably find some in your local Craigs list, humane society or pet store.
