Can a pet snake survive without meat?
Thursday, December 17th, 2009
My family wants to get a pet snake. I would get one, except I dont think I could feed it a live mouse, or anything live. Can you get cubes of meat or could it survive on anything else? Like can you buy snake food in cubes or in cans?
THANKS!

No. You would have to provide the snake meat.
You may be able to get the snake to eat dead rodents, by holding the dead mouse (it has to be warm – if cold, you need to warm it) by a pair of forceps and let it grab.
You could get the same in a pet shop.
Cubes – No; I dont know if you can get dead rats/ lizards in cans

How do you feel about mice that have already been humanely killed? Feeding live rodents is not recommended for pet snakes anyway and the standard practice is to use frozen (thawed) rodents. Snakes only eat about once per week. They need whole body prey to get all the nutrients they require so cubes of meat would not be sufficient in the long term. There are some nutritionally complete commercially processed snake foods available that come in a sausage like form but not all snakes are likely to transition to taking that without some effort.

No – If they generally eat mice & rats. You can buy them already killed as frozen/thawed at your local pet store. Truly, though, if this is how you feel, and that is OK, than this is not the pet for you and you should not get one.

No. Snakes are carnivores. They eat meat. You can get a snake that is accustomed to eating frozen/thawed rodents, though. There are many online frozen rodent retailers, like rodentpro.com. Just buy from a reputable breeder and ask if the snake is taking f/t. You could also get a species that eats bugs, but they are usually more fragile in captivity. But do a ton of research first, read many caresheets online. Snakes are more complicated than your average pet. Good luck.

you can buy prekilled / frozen mice that is the easiest, no there is no way a snake will readily eat cubed meat they dont get that in the wild they are not bred to eat cubed meat or canned food.
Either forget getting a reptile or suck it up.

No has to have meat. Maybe given frozen thawed animals instead of live, but must eat meat. There is an Expensive alternative that comes in sausage like links, but it is never seen in pet stores or other stores. It may be ordered off line. Here is a link.

I’ve read about sausages made of rat meat for snakes . I’ve never seen them or tried them . They are supposed to be healthy and come in different sizes .
