How to divert egrets/herons from koi ponds to keep them from eating koi?
Is there something I can use to scare them away without resorting to a net to cover pond
I have no intention of harming egrets. I just need an article, i.e. a scaregrow for fields, to keep these birds from killing my koi and my pets

We have a big problem with that here. The only thing that discourages them is to dig the pond so deep it covers them, they don’t like to stand in water above their heads. Netting is really the best way because lots of other animals(foxes, raccoons, snakes, cats, etc…) also eat koi.
We have ‘nuisance’ birds around where I live (fl.). They congregate in convenience store parking lots begging for handouts. If been trapped by the great blue herons more than once. If you give them anything, even more will surround your vehicle.
Plant thorny plants around the koi pond. Bougainvilleas have
long spiky thorns that will deter most intruders and they have beautiful blooms.
Wow! What a problem!
I live in a semi-desert part of Texas, and it blows my mind that people actually have problems with animals we never get to see around here. We’ll see an odd one at a playa lake now and then, but nothing that could ever create a problem.
You’re making me jealous! Hope you find a solution.
listen bro i got this problem too. put up a little string like a trip wire would be. around where the birds have access. then they will be scared to cross it cuz they wanna be able to get away quick if anything happens cuz they are paranoid about eating, like a lot of animals are
There are a few items you can use to deter heron. One is a heron decoy. Heron are very territorial and when they see another heron, they move on to the next body of water. Be careful during early spring(mating season) to not use a decoy, as it will attract other mating heron.
A second product is a motion activated sprinkler called a “scarecrow”. This device is placed near the pond and is hooked up to a water supply. When heron come close the the pond, the product activates and sprays a harmless burst of water at the predator. This will scare heron, raccoons and other predators away from your koi.
